attentional focus for self-regulation

Self-Awareness With the Breath creates self-regulation. Self-Regulation is the ability to ground and anchor yourself during emotional intensity, that is internally or externally stimulated. It’s taking ownership of your process and deciding that you want to respond versus react to certain stimuli. Remaining self-referant during emotionally turbulent times can calm your nervous system and inspire healing. That is, if you have done the work to lay a solid foundation for stress management. If you are used to giving way to your dysregulated emotions and chaotic thoughts, then deferring to self, may be detrimental. For this reason, it’s helpful to create a regime of healthy techniques that strengthen your mental and emotional health on a regular basis.

Attending to…or focusing on specific parts of your body or experience can bring relief and healing. Attentional focus gives the brain something else to focus on during times of stress. As you focus your attention, there is awareness of sensation, emotion, feelings, etc. without a specific need to fix anything. Without the job of fixing the situation, the brain and nervous system can simply be in the moment of experiencing.. This expanded awareness creates space for you to sift out what is no longer needed, clear energetic residue and feel better in the moment.
