this present moment
Staying present is one of the most grounding techniques available to us. Mixed with proper breathing exercises, presence brings healing. Fixating on the difficult, painful or traumatic past creates dysregulation which might eventually lead to depression. Focusing too intensely on the future unknown creates worry and can lead to anxiety. When we remain present in our feelings, it helps us focus our thoughts on the present. For example, if you experienced a traumatic childhood, you may be triggered by a memory of the past. If in this moment, you allow yourself to notice how you feel in the present, rather than how you felt in the past memory, you can often calm your nervous system. It takes practice, but the more a person remains focused on their present tasks, feelings, and experiences, it can reduce triggers and alleviate exhaustion from always feeling past emotional pain. Eventually, remaining present in the NOW moment will automatically sync your breath with the body…creating a grounded experience of self-regulation.
